Initial Steps

Goals
As a starting point in planning your website, clarify its goals. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • How will this website support my organization's mission?
  • What are the two or three most important goals for the site?

You might want to write down these goals: it will help you when you are actually creating the website by keeping your focus clear. Refer to them as you work on your site.

Audience
Next, define your audience. You will need to consider the following questions:

  • Who is your website's target audience?
  • Are there other additional audiences?
  • What are their backgrounds, interests, needs and expectations?
  • How can you meet their needs and expectations?
  • What do you want them to take away from their visit to your site?

The key is to look at how your website will appear from the user's perspective. You want to make it easy for them to find what they need.

Content
Finally, assess your website content. You want to present information on your website in the most effective fashion. Consider the following questions:

  • What sorts of content will you present on your site?
  • Of this content, which is most important to your audience?
  • How can various types of content be made most accessible to your audience?

You may want to create a written inventory of content you already have and content you still need to collect. This will allow you to strategize on where to concentrate your efforts. Since building a website is an ongoing process, you may want to prioritize, presenting certain sets of content initially, and adding other content to the live website later.
