A promotion is more than a simple link: it promotes the title of the section along with the titles of all the child sections beneath it. It can also promote the introductory text and images from the section(s), if you choose. This gives the user a useful view into the promoted sections, and by clicking on a title they will go directly to that full section.

Promotions are most useful for the home page: you can give your users, from their very first contact with the website, windows into other important sections within your site. One particularly useful application of promotions is to have the contents of an event page promoted to the home page. The event items will automatically appear upon their respective publication dates, continually updating your home page with fresh information.
